High rise (sits at the natural waist), straight through the hip and thigh, raw hem at roughly a 3.5-inch inseam. Closest direct competitor to the Levi’s 501 Short, but with Madewell’s slightly cleaner silhouette and Japanese-mill cotton.

The denim is what justifies the price gap over Levi’s — heavier weight, denser weave, and noticeably better stitching. They feel substantial in a way mass-market denim doesn’t. Honest sizing note: Madewell’s denim runs slightly small in the waist compared to their tag size; if you’re between sizes, size up. The rigid cotton softens beautifully after 5-10 washes.
