Description
The 501 Original Short is the cutoff every other cutoff is trying to be — high-rise (sits at the natural waist), straight through the hip and thigh, raw-hem at roughly a 3-inch inseam. This is the silhouette you used to make yourself by hacking the legs off a pair of vintage 501 jeans, except Levi’s saved you the scissors and the uneven cut. 100% cotton, no stretch, button fly.
Honest sizing note: the 501 Short runs true to tag in the waist but the rigid (non-stretch) cotton has zero forgiveness. If you fluctuate even half a size, size up — they will not give. The first wash will pull them in another quarter-inch and bleed indigo aggressively. The lack of stretch also means they ride up less than stretch denim shorts — a real advantage if you’ve ever spent a day yanking down the hem of a stretch short.
Why we recommend it: The original cutoff in its purest form. High-rise, rigid cotton, raw hem. The shape every brand has been copying since the ’70s.
