The 501 women’s cuts currently available

501 Original (Women’s): the core women’s 501. Same 11-inch rise, straight leg, button fly, 14.5-oz rigid cotton as the men’s cut, but sized in women’s waist measurements and contoured slightly through the hip for a women’s body. Available in women’s sizes typically 23-34.

Sizing: how Levi’s 501 Women’s actually runs

The 501 Original Women’s is sold in even-number waist sizes (24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34). The waist measurement corresponds to actual body waist — a tagged 28 fits a 28-inch waist. This is different from some women’s denim lines that size vanity-small.

On my body (5’6″, 28 waist, 38 hips, pear-shape), the 28 Original fits true in the waist with about half an inch of ease. The hip has noticeable room — the rigid cotton doesn’t contour to fuller hips the way stretch denim does. This is why many pear-shapes prefer the 501 Curve: the Curve pulls in the waist relative to the hip and fits snugger across the whole range.

For straighter body shapes (smaller hip-to-waist ratio), the regular 501 fits cleanly. For curvier shapes, consider the Curve.

Fabric and how it fits women’s bodies

The 501 Women’s uses the same 14.5-oz rigid cotton as the men’s 501 Original. This means break-in is identical — 20-30 wears to fully settle into shape. For women new to rigid denim after years of stretch jeans, this feels stiff and unforgiving at first.

My pair (medium stonewash, Original women’s) has been through about 40 wears and 8 washes over a year. Behavior:

Length shrunk approximately 1.5% after first wash. Stabilized after that.

Waist held true — no visible stretching.

Color faded gently at the thighs and seat. Still reads as medium stonewash, just with more character.

Honest whiskers developed at the hip crease after 20 wears. Pocket lining visible through front pocket after 30 wears (standard Levi’s behavior, not a defect).

No fabric damage, no seam issues. The 501 construction is durable.

Styling and versatility

The 501 Women’s is the most versatile jean in the brand’s women’s lineup. It styles with tees and sneakers (casual), with silk blouses and loafers (smart-casual), with blazers and ankle boots (polished), and with a cropped sweater and boots (trend-forward). The straight leg and classic silhouette carry across contexts.

Honest negatives

Two things to flag. First, the rigid 100% cotton fabric is unforgiving for women who want immediate comfort. Second, the hip fit isn’t contoured for pear-shape bodies — if you have a significantly smaller waist than hip ratio, the regular 501 can gap at the waistband when the hips fit.
