Banana Republic currently offers petite jeans in several silhouettes: skinny, straight, wide leg, and a barrel leg that they introduced more recently. Petite inseams range from 26 to 27 inches depending on the style, which puts them in the correct range for women 5’4″ and under.

Their denim skews more polished than casual. If you are looking for distressed, heavily washed, or trendy silhouettes, this is not the brand for that. What I Tested

Mid-Rise Skinny Jean (Petite)

The petite skinny has a 26-inch inseam and a mid-rise that measured 9 inches on my pair. The fit was clean through the thigh and tapered neatly to the ankle without excess bunching. The denim is medium weight with about 2% elastane, giving it enough stretch for comfort without the jegging feel.

On my 5’2″ frame, the proportions were correct. The knee hit at the right place, and the ankle opening was narrow enough to wear with boots or flats without looking sloppy. This is a dependable, unexciting skinny jean. I mean that as a compliment.

This was the pair I was most curious about. The petite version has a 27-inch inseam and a high rise measuring 11 inches. Wide leg jeans are notoriously difficult for petite women because the proportions can overwhelm a shorter frame, and the extra length almost always requires hemming in standard sizes.

Banana Republic handled this well. The leg width is generous without being extreme, and the petite inseam meant I could wear these with a 1.5-inch heel and get a clean break at the shoe. The high rise elongated my torso-to-leg ratio, which compensated for the volume in the leg.

Barrel Leg Jean (Petite)

The barrel leg is Banana Republic’s trendier offering, and the petite version has a 26.5-inch inseam. The shape is wider through the thigh and tapers at the ankle, creating that rounded silhouette that has been popular for the past year.

On me, this was the weakest of the three. The widest point of the barrel hit below my knee rather than at it, which told me the proportions were scaled down from the standard size rather than redesigned for petite frames. It still looked acceptable, but compared to brands like Agolde or Citizens of Humanity that get the barrel proportion right for shorter legs, this fell short.

Quality and Construction

Banana Republic petite jeans are well-made for their price range, which sits around $80-$120 retail. The stitching is clean, the hardware is solid, and the denim feels substantial. I have washed each pair multiple times and have not seen any significant fading, shrinking, or warping.

The denim weight leans medium to heavy, which I appreciate. Lightweight denim tends to cling and show every bump, which is not ideal for anyone, petite or otherwise. I took my usual size 4/27 across all three styles and it was consistent. The waist ran true, the hip had adequate room, and I did not need to size up or down. This is worth noting because sizing inconsistency is one of the most frustrating things about shopping for petite jeans across different brands.

One detail: Banana Republic’s “petite” designation affects more than just the inseam. The rise, the knee placement, and the overall leg proportions are adjusted. This is how petite sizing should work, and not every brand does it this way. Some just chop inches off the hem and call it petite, which is not the same thing at all.

The Honest Downside

Banana Republic petite jeans are safe. That is both their strength and their limitation. You will not find fashion-forward washes, aggressive distressing, or cutting-edge silhouettes here. If you want jeans with personality, you will likely be disappointed. These are the jeans equivalent of a well-fitted blazer: reliable, polished, and a little boring.

The barrel leg being improperly proportioned for petite frames also concerns me, because it suggests their newer silhouettes may not get the same design attention as their core styles.
