Description
The 501 is the prototype. Levi’s patented the riveted jean in 1873, and the 501 pattern — button fly, straight leg, sits at the waist — has been in continuous production since then. When someone says “classic Levi’s,” this is what they mean. Every other jean silhouette in existence is a variation on or rebellion against this cut.
The 501 Original is modern-sizing, modern-construction Levi’s — not an authentic vintage reissue. The cut has drifted slimmer through the seat and thigh over the decades compared to true 70s, 80s, and 90s vintage 501s. If you want the modern 501 silhouette in new denim, this is it. If you want the roomier vintage cut, look at the 501 ’93 reissue or hunt true vintage.
Sizing honesty: True to tag in the waist. Rigid (non-stretch) cotton shrinks 1 inch in length after first hot wash. The indigo bleeds aggressively for the first 3-4 washes — wash separately or commit to the worn-in look.
