Levi’s Size Chart for Men: How to Find Your Fit
Levi’s publishes a size chart on their site. I’ve owned sixteen pairs of their jeans over the last decade, and about half of them didn’t match it.
The problem with the official Levi’s size chart isn’t that it’s wrong — it’s that it assumes every fit is cut from the same block. It isn’t. A 32 in a 501 does not measure the same as a 32 in a 511 or a 550. After measuring every pair I own against a steel tape, I put together a cross-reference that actually reflects reality. If you’re here from the Mens Denim hub trying to figure out what to order before a Black Friday run, this should save you two trips to UPS for returns.
Why the official Levi’s size chart for men doesn’t tell the whole story
The chart you’ll find on levi.com lists waist (in inches) by a numeric size, inseam by length, and calls it a day. It’s accurate as a starting point. What it doesn’t tell you is that the 501 is cut with a straight block from waist through thigh, while the 511 is tapered, the 550 is full through the seat with a relaxed thigh, and the 541 sits almost an inch higher in the rise than a 505. Two pairs with the same “32 x 32” label can fit completely differently on the same body.
The other catch: Levi’s grade shifts. A 501 made in 2015 in Mexico does not measure identically to a 501 made in 2024 in Vietnam. Production runs drift up to half an inch on the waist. If you’re buying resale, measure the garment — don’t trust the tag.
How to measure yourself for Levi’s
Do this before ordering anything. You need three numbers.
Waist. Measure where you actually wear jeans — for most guys, that’s at or just below the natural waist, about an inch below the belly button. Wrap a cloth tape snug but not tight, keep it level all the way around. Round to the nearest half inch.
Inseam. Put on a pair of jeans that hit the ground where you want them to hit. Measure from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the hem. This is your inseam number. If you want a slight break, add an inch. If you want cropped, subtract one to two inches.
Thigh. Measure around the thickest part of your thigh, about an inch below the crotch. This is the number that decides whether the 511 is going to work for you or whether you need the 505 or 550.
My numbers for reference: waist 32, inseam 32, thigh 22. I’m 5’11”, 175 pounds, moderately built legs from running. That’s the frame I’m measuring these fits against.
Fit-by-fit: the real Levi jeans size chart
501 Original
The straight-cut benchmark. A 32 x 32 measures roughly 16″ flat across the waist (so 32″ circumference), 22.5″ across the thigh, and 17″ at the leg opening. Rigid shrink-to-fit versions run 1–2 inches bigger in the waist than labeled — soak and dry them once before judging. The current pre-washed “original fit” runs closer to tag. Buy your true waist number.
501 ’93 Straight
Revival cut based on the 1993 block. Higher rise than modern 501, slightly looser through the thigh (around 23″), same straight opening. Fits one waist size smaller than you’d expect — if you take a 32 in the regular 501, the ’93 feels like a 33. Size down if you want a tailored sit at the waist.
505 Regular
The forgotten fit. Straight leg, sits at the natural waist, roomy through seat and thigh (23″ on a 32). These are what dads in the 90s wore. If the 501 is too slim through the thigh, the 505 is the answer. Runs true to tag on waist, inseam is honest within a quarter inch.
511 Slim
The modern default. Slight taper, sits just below the waist. A 32 measures about 21.5″ across the thigh and 14.5″ at the opening. Fits true to tag on waist but runs short on inseam — order one inch longer than your measurement to compensate for the first wash shrink.
513 Slim Straight
The compromise between 511 and 514. Slim through the seat, straight from knee down. Thigh measures about 22″ on a 32. Waist runs true. These disappeared and came back — the current production is better made than the 2018 run.
514 Straight
Slightly relaxed. Straight leg, sits below the waist, modest room through the seat. Thigh around 22.5″. This is the fit to pick if the 505 looks too dated and the 511 feels like tights. Waist runs a hair large — expect a half inch of slack on tag.
541 Athletic Taper
Purpose-built for guys with quads. Room through seat and thigh (23.5″ on a 32), tapers hard from the knee. Waist grades true but shows more vanity stretch than most Levi’s — don’t size down just because it feels snug at try-on; it will loosen a full size after three wears.
550 Relaxed
Full cut through seat and thigh, tapered slightly at the ankle. Thigh around 24″ on a 32. This is the rescue fit for anyone whose squat rack retired the 511s. Waist runs half a size large. Levi’s still makes them in big and tall inseams.
559 Relaxed Straight
Between a 514 and a 550 in thigh room. Straight opening. Easy fit for everyday wear, underrated for guys with a bit of belly. Covered in depth in the Levi’s 559 Relaxed Straight piece.
569 Loose Straight
Biggest straight cut in the range. Thigh pushing 25″. If you’re between a 550 and a wide-leg, this is the slot. Discontinued in some markets; Amazon and Target still carry current runs (Levis 569 Loose Straight on Amazon).
Inseam and the shrink problem
Every pair of Levi’s shrinks after the first hot wash. Pre-washed styles (the ones with “rinsed” or “dark stonewash” labels) shrink about a quarter inch in length and maybe the same in waist. Rigid or shrink-to-fit 501s shrink up to 2 inches in length and 1–1.5 inches in waist. The tag number on rigid pairs is pre-shrink. Cold wash and hang dry keeps the number closer to honest; hot wash and machine dry will cost you an inch of inseam you can’t get back.
If you want a true 32″ finished inseam in a pre-washed fit, order 32. If you want a true 32″ in rigid 501, order 34. For shrink-to-fit, soak in hot water for 30 minutes, hang dry, then measure. Levi’s will tell you the same thing in their care tag — most guys don’t read it.
Waist vanity, and how Levi’s compares to other brands
Levi’s size chart for men is honest within about half an inch of the tag. A Levi’s 32 measures about 32″ around. For reference: a Wrangler 32 measures 32–33″, a Gap 32 measures 33–34″ (legitimate vanity sizing), and a J.Crew 32 measures 31–32″. The closer a brand stays to actual inches, the less you have to guess. Levi’s is on the honest end of the spectrum. Most European designer brands run a full inch smaller than tag — size up when crossing over.
If you want a cross-brand reference, the Levi’s Jeans for Men piece maps every style number against body type.
Big and tall sizing
Levi’s big and tall line extends waist up to 58 and inseam up to 38 in most core fits (501, 505, 550, 559). The grading is slightly different — the rise goes up about an inch and the thigh opens proportionally, not linearly. If you’re between a standard 40 and the big and tall 40, the big and tall will feel higher in the rise and roomier through the seat. For guys 6’2″ and up, the standard 34″ inseam runs short — order the tall length even if your waist is in standard range.
Women versus men sizing — a note if you’re cross-shopping
Levi’s women’s and men’s use completely different grading. A men’s 30 waist does not equal a women’s 30. Women’s Levi’s are graded on a separate system that shifts by a factor of roughly 1.5 inches per size up. If you’re shopping the women’s wedgie or 501 for a slouchier fit, you need to measure a pair you already own and match the flat waist number. The men’s Levi’s size chart does not cross-apply.
The verdict
Measure yourself once with a cloth tape, write the three numbers down, and keep them in your phone. The Levi’s size chart for men is accurate as long as you know which fit you’re reading against — a 32 in a 511 is not a 32 in a 550. My rule of thumb: order your true measured waist in pre-washed fits, size up two inches in shrink-to-fit, and add an inch to inseam to cover wash shrink. Do that and you’ll stop returning jeans. Start with the fit that matches your build, not the fit the model on the website is wearing.
Once you have the fit dialed, Amazon’s Levi’s storefront carries the full size range including tall and big pairs (Levis Mens Jeans on Amazon).
FAQ
Does the Levi jeans size chart run small or large?
Levi’s runs honest to within about half an inch on waist. The shrink-to-fit 501 is the main exception — it measures 1–1.5 inches larger than tag before its first hot soak. Inseam is where most guys get burned: order an inch longer than your measured leg to account for shrink.
How do I know if I need the 501, 511, or 505?
Measure your thigh. If it’s under 21″ you can wear a 511 comfortably. 21–23″ is the 501 and 513 zone. Over 23″ you want a 505, 514, or 541 depending on how tapered a leg you like. Thigh is the deciding measurement, not waist.
Can I trust the Levi’s size guide for resale pairs on eBay or Poshmark?
Only if the seller posts flat measurements. Grading drifted across production runs and countries — a 2010 made-in-Mexico 501 is not a 2023 made-in-Vietnam 501. Ask for waist flat, thigh flat at 1″ below crotch, and inseam. If the seller won’t measure, skip.
Should I size up or down when between two Levi’s sizes?
Size up on rigid or shrink-to-fit. Size down on pre-washed stretch fits (511, 513, 541) — the elastane gives. Size true on 501 original and 505 regular.
Why do my Levi’s feel looser after a day of wear?
Cotton denim stretches up to 3–4% in wear, mostly in the waist and knees. Pre-washed pairs stretch less than rigid; stretch pairs stretch more in the first few hours and then stabilize. If yours feel right in the morning and loose by evening, you’re between sizes — go down half.
