Retail sales move 20–40% off. Resale can move 50–70% off for the same piece in near-new condition. The trade-off is: no returns, slower inventory matching, and the authentication question.

The RealReal. Authenticated, returnable (within 21 days), strongest for luxury designer denim (Saint Laurent, Khaite, Gucci). Discounts run 40–60% off retail. The authentication isn’t perfect but is genuinely the best in the industry for this price point.

eBay. Genuine treasure hunt territory for vintage or discontinued cuts. Auctions can land below Poshmark pricing on less-searched items. Buyer authentication is limited — don’t use it for luxury unless you know how to verify.
Depop. Younger user base, style-driven rather than brand-driven. Good for specific vintage pieces. Less reliable for authentication.
Sample sales: the best-kept secret
Sample sales are how the industry gets rid of excess inventory and samples at 60–75% off retail. If you live in New York or LA, this is the cheapest path to designer denim in new-with-tags condition.
The reliable ones: 260 Sample Sale in NYC (rotating brand schedule, check their calendar monthly). Soiffer Haskin in NYC (higher-end luxury). Saks Off 5th warehouse sales (lower-tier designer). Brand-direct sample sales (Frame, Rag & Bone, AGOLDE have hosted periodic sales — follow the brands on Instagram for notice).
If you’re not in NY or LA, many sample sales now have online components (Ruelala, Gilt, Hautelook have absorbed most of the digital space). The discounts are real but the “sample” selection is narrower online than in person.
Outlets: worth the trip for some brands
Designer outlet prices vary widely. Saint Laurent outlet (Cabazon, CA, and Woodbury Commons, NY) runs 40–60% off with current-to-recent-season stock. Balmain has limited outlet presence. Gucci outlets exist but denim is rarely stocked.
For premium denim specifically: Nordstrom Rack carries regular stock from AGOLDE, Frame, Mother, Citizens, and 7FAM, but the selection is last-season and sometimes irregular. Prices run 40–60% off original retail. Saks Off 5th carries similar inventory at similar discounts. Both require patience — you go when you’re nearby, not when you need a specific cut.
The sale-shopping mistakes to avoid
Three mistakes I’ve made so you don’t have to.
Mistake one: buying the “deal” silhouette you wouldn’t buy at full retail. A 50% discount on a cut that doesn’t fit your body is still a waste. Designer jeans on sale is a category where patience pays. Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July and Half-Yearly in December–January are your two biggest retail windows; Poshmark and The RealReal are the reliable resale channels year-round. Skip the “up to 40% off” banner sales outside these windows — the real deals are deeper and more focused. Never buy a cut you wouldn’t pay full retail for just because it’s discounted; a bad fit on sale is still a bad fit. And if you live in NY or LA, the sample sale calendar is the single cheapest path to new designer denim in the country. I buy three to four pairs of designer denim per year and haven’t paid more than $160 for any of them since 2023. The calendar works if you work it.
